Ayurvedic Professors to give Lectures in the US

April 17, 2007

(Ayushveda.com) - The western world has suddenly woken up to the great health benefits of the Indian Ayurvedic brand of medicine, and how! The herbal medicine market is indeed booming in the US , and is pegged at around an annual estimate of $40 billion dollars. A very major portion of these herbal medicines are Ayurveda based preparations that have been produced in India , and exported abroad. Most of these medicines are manufactured in major cities of India using traditional Ayurvedic techniques of preparations.

The US has been looking for an opportunity to have some eminent Indian Ayurvedic professors teach their craft to American doctors. India has been thinking quite concretely about this proposition, and in a major recent development, the Ayurvedic fraternity of India has decided to send some of their best doctors to the US to give a series of lectures on the subject.

Dr. Navin C. Shah, a senior medical representative of the Indian medical representatives in the US had a meeting with the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh in this regard. The meeting was quite constructive, and provided good results. The Indian Prime Minister has extended his full support to the venture. As the next step, Dr. Navin C. Shah is scheduled to meet up with some senior Indian bureaucrats to work out an arrangement to finance the expenditure of sending some Indian Ayurvedic doctors to the US . Initially, two Indian doctors would be sent to the US , and they would serve as tutors as Ayurveda to the doctors residing there.

With the assent of the Indian Prime Minister, this project has taken off really well, and the doctors from both countries are quite hopeful of its success. Several organizations are already coming forward to pool in the financial requirements of the projects.

Dr. Navin C. Shah envisions this project as a major step in spreading the Ayurvedic knowledge to the west, where there is a booming market for herbal medicines already. There is a great potential for the success of Ayurveda in the west, given the fact that this medicinal therapy is totally nature-friendly and has the least of side-effects on the human body system. The success of the project will bring in a sizable amount of revenue to the Indian Ayurvedic community, which will help them to further their researches and make the ancient herbal science more accessible to countries around the world. At the same time, it will benefit the Americans with a treatment method that is the most harmonious with nature.

Dr. Navin Shah himself has a great profile in the world of medicine. He has been a president of the American Association of Physicians, which is a body of 41,000 doctors from the US . Today, he practices as an urologist in the city of Washington . His preliminary market research on the potentials of Ayurveda in the US has certainly gone a long way in convincing the Indian authorities to embark on such a large-scale project. He estimates that there is a big share for India in the $40 billion dollar herbal medicine industry that the US currently has.
